Check out Paul Brok's Into The Silent Land, where he covers unusual mental conditions (a la Oliver Sacks) dispersed with his own musings on consciousness. In fact it is a bit of a mystery why we are conscious in the first place. You'll like this book because he has some ideas about how reality and consciousness may not just reside in our head and bodies but also in the _interaction_ between bodies.
